TSUNAMI - SUPPORT NEEDED Friday December 31th 2004 10:22
For the animals suffering because of the Tsunami
If you have any contacts with organisations willing
to help they desperately need to buy large quantities of
food.
Hundreds of dogs who relied on local restaurants are
now starving as all the restaurants are gone.
Some of their local volunteers are either dead or
injured.
The following is still our basic advisory about how
donors can best assist the animal aid groups in the
areas hit by the tsunami.
The Sri Lankan organizations we are in touch with
are still just beginning to make contact with those
in the hardest hit areas, so the focus for now, as
regards Sri Lanka, is upon gathering resources to
enable quick response once the people in the field
know exactly what they need.
There seem to be no organizations up and running in
Indonesia, other than the Bali-based Asian office of
HSUS/HSI.
The Soi Dog Foundation and Blue Cross of India
remain the point organizations for the Thai and
Indian relief efforts.
ANIMAL PEOPLE publisher Kim Bartlett is collecting
and relaying donations for Sri Lankan tsunami animal
relief.

Phuket Animal Welfare Society cofounder and board
member Leone Cosens was killed, apparently while
trying to rescue others. Some local Phuket Animal
Welfare Society and Soi Dog volunteers are missing,
but we have no other names as yet.
The Chennai region of Tamil Nadu was the hardest hit
part of India. Checks can be mailed directly to the
Blue Cross of India, or sent payable to ANIMAL
PEOPLE (to be tax exempt in the U.S.), with notation

These two Indian organizations also came through
with relatively little damage, are actively
assisting the animals in their regions, and can

Thank you. I know that there will be some people who will balk at this and say that all monies should go to humans, but animals are a huge part in our lives and in the lives of children. If have any doubt, read this story -
Dog Rescues 7 Year Old in India
She had three sons, and only two arms. She grabbed the youngest two and ran - figuring the oldest, 7-year-old Dinakaran, had the best chance of outrunning the tsunami churning toward her home.
But Dinakaran didn't follow. He headed for the safest place he knew, the small family hut just 40 yards from the seashore.
Sangeeta thought she would never see him again. The family dog saw to it that she did.
While water lapped at Sangeeta's heels as she rushed up the hill, the scruffy yellow dog named Selvakumar ducked into the hut after Dinakaran.
Nipping and nudging, he did everything in his canine power to get the boy up the hill.
Is there a program in place whereby individuals can donated their accumulation of Purina Weight Circles to assist and care for animals affected by the Tsumani disaster?
Posted by: Sue Taylor on January 7, 2005 9:12 AMHi,
I contacted Purina and they are getting in touch with their public relations people and will be getting back to me. They said it would take a couple of days, so I don't expect an answer before Monday, but I'll let you know and I'll post it here. Thanks!

Its amazing Denmark has today collectively decided to turn in some pocket change in favour of the victims of the BIG Tsunami in Asia.
One of the biggest newspapers in Denmark writes about the different private contributions pr. country and pr. Citizen the numbers are from yesterday; in Danish currency - Kroner:
Norway: 76 Kr pr. citizen 344 mill.; country as a hole
Switzerland: 76 Kr pr. citizen 548 mill.; country as a hole
Netherlands: 51 Kr pr. citizen 836 mill.; country as a hole
Sweden: 37 Kr pr. citizen 338 mill.; country as a hole
Ireland: 30 Kr pr. citizen 120 mill.; country as a hole
Australia: 28 Kr pr. citizen 499 mill.; country as a hole
Denmark: 25 Kr pr. citizen 135 mill.; country as a hole
Finland: 24 Kr pr. citizen 124 mill.; country as a hole
Germany: 23 Kr pr. citizen 1.878 mill.; country as a hole
Saudi A.: 23 Kr pr. citizen 570 mill.; country as a hole
Great Britain: 18 Kr pr. citizen 1.055 mill.; country as a hole
Greece: 11 Kr pr. citizen 127 mill.; country as a hole
Austria: 9,5 Kr pr. citizen 77 mill.; country as a hole
France: 4,5 Kr pr. citizen 276 mill.; country as a hole
USA: 2,3 Kr pr. citizen 677 mill.; country as a hole
Take a good look isnt it remarkable how those figures looks. Why is Norway in front 30XUSA Come on USA you can do much much better than that!!!!!
Best Regards
Hans Henrik
How come? Maybe if the US wasn't busy *always* contributing, instead of *just* when it's going to get us headlines, we'd have more pocket change like Denmark does.
DENMARK'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS, 2000-2002
http://www.um.dk/en/menu/DevelopmentPolicy/Statistics/MultilateralAssistance/
2000 - 588 million USD
2001 - 519.2 million USD
2002 - 518.4 million USD
even though the page was edited may 2004, there aren't any figures for 2003 or 2004
Total U.S. Contributions to the UN System,
Both Assessed and Voluntary -
Estimated at $3.0 Billion Sept 9, 2003
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/rls/24236.htm
That's B I L L I O N not million - B I L L I O N.
"U.S. Financial Contributions to the United Nations
The United States is the largest financial contributor to the UN, and has been every year since its creation in 1945. U.S. contributions to the UN system in 2003 were well over $3 billion. In-kind contributions include items such as food donations for the World Food Program."
Get your facts straight. Yeah Denmark for helping out for a change.
