Da Goddess

Check this story out over on Da Goddess

Beautifully written.

Excerpt:

She watched him moving the boxes for a moment. She couldn't stand it for long. It was too painful. Marly felt as though little pieces of her heart were now shrouded in newsprint and foam peanuts - and she felt as though she were suffocating as the tape was applied, sealing those seams and all their dreams in a cardboard casket.
With tears in her eyes, she turned away.

Kane and Ghost of the Robot

It's true I am feeling fluffy this morning, but seriously, check out the site for the band that Christian Kane is in.

KANE

There's some sample music on the site and it's terrific. If it sparks your interest, you can purchase thier CD, on-line, via Pay Pal.

There's my unsolicited plug for the day :)

Weird thought - We had a K-9 dog at work named Kane and he was always referred instead by the name Fluffy.....no, I *just* thought of that, not beforehand.

James Marsters is the frontman for a band too, but I don't know anything about their music. I just found out they have a website and I haven't listened to the samples yet, so please give them a try too

Angel

Nice post on a
Visit To The Set Of "ANGEL"

Small excerpt:

"I do think at times my mouth did fall open upon seeing those places so familiar when watching Angel. I now have a much better understanding of the incredible mind-boggling work and effort that goes into making each episode, not the acting and filming but the other stuff. On the sets I saw crews of builders hammering and sawing and painting, all the things needed to make us believe. "

Is It Or Isn't It?

I went to Staples this afternoon. I wanted to get photo printing paper. My son gave me a digital camera for Christmas and I wanted to print some pictures of Sebastian to send along to the vet. Both vets have sent sympathy cards, they've really been unbelievable.

Anyway, I see a sign for Staples brand glossy 4x6, it says 2 for $25.00 and underneath it says $12.50 ea. I decide to get one pack because I'm not sure of the quality. As I'm pulling out of the lot I thought to myself that the total that I'd just paid for the paper, some paper clips and a mini stapler seemed high. My son checks the receipt and I was charged $24.98 for the paper.
Back I go in the store and I drag him with me to look at the sign. Says exactly what I said, except I hadn't noticed that the left side of the sign, which is not in the bright yellow portion advertising the 2 for $25.00, $12.50 ea, states buy one for $24.98, mind you the "Buy one" is small print. Even the girl who tried to help us said that's where you look (the yellow section) I figure I'll spend the 2 cents and get the 2nd box, even though I really don't want it and I don't feel like spending this much, but, I proceed to customer service.
The whole thing really irks me though and the girl at customer service isn't very sympathetic to my questions regarding this misleading sign. Her exact reply was "Do you want them or not?" I suppose this is where I should mention that I have an Irish temper and it had just been sparked. I smirk, pause and then ask for a manager. I got the distinct feeling he saw my point, but he wouldn't cave. This was when I asked if after purchasing the 2 for $25.00 that I could then just stand there and return one for $12.50? Yes, I could......for a second, he seemed perplexed by his own answer and seemed to suddenly realize how stupid this all was. I looked at him, wondering if he'd now try to make sense of all this?
Why should I waste everyone's time by buying them and then immediately hand them back as a return? But, that's exactly what was required.. This was after another employee, told me in a rather heated manner that they'd been doing this for years. I think it's false advertising, why even say that they are $12.50 ea on your sign if you can't make a single purchase of *one* for $12.50?

Amazing

I came across this article today about a young girl who was raising money to provide protective vests for the K-9 dogs in Maine. She had already vested 60 dogs, with another 40 to go when -
Kelly received a call from Maine's Attorney General informing her about a Maine law that prohibits anyone from soliciting public funds for the benefit of law enforcement. The law is intended to protect the citizens of Maine from coercive and intimidating fundraising that would undermine the relationship between law enforcement and their communities. In cooperation with the Attorney General's Office and Maine law, Maine Vest-a-Dog suspended all fundraising activities in October, 2001."

Instead of giving up, she contacted a politician and fought to have the law changed and she succeeded.

Please visit her web page - Maine Vest A dog and read about this amazing girl!

New License Plates

Got the new license plates the other day - went for the newer design, just liked it better

animal.jpg

From the NJ DMV site:
This new plate is an animated redo of the Animal Friendly plate that debuted in 1994. The new design uses characters from Patrick McDonnell's syndicated comic strip "Mutts."

Special companions don't have to say a word. Caring, loyalty, acceptance: it's all understood.
For thousands of years, pets have held a special place in the lives of humans. The friendship between a pet and its owner is exceptional. Just walk into your home after you've been away. When your pet greets you, you can feel the warmth, love, and friendship.

It can make your day. Now you can help other people and pets feel this warmth, love, trust, and friendship by purchasing the special reflectorized animal welfare license plate shown here.

The Motor Vehicle Commission is making this beautifully designed plate available to New Jersey motorists. Funds from the sale of the plate will benefit the animal population control fund.

Show you care about New Jersey's COMPANION ANIMALS

From the very young to the very old, pets bring joy to people's lives. They offer unconditional love, warmth, trust, and friendship to those who love them.

They bring joy to our lives. In return, we take care of their needs to ensure they are happy and healthy. Unfortunately, there are many dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that have no one to care for them and never will.

By purchasing this special animal welfare plate for your vehicle, you can help prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens.

Be ANIMAL FRIENDLY!

Monies generated from these special plate sales will help fund the animal population control program run by the Department of Health. The program provides low cost spaying and neutering for thousands of pets and encourages the adoption of thousands more each year in New Jersey.

Oh Get Over Yourselves!

IT'S 'VEX & THE CITY' FOR B'KLYN FANS

"A Manhattanite moving to Brooklyn was a big deal 15 years ago, but not anymore," said Jim Cornell of Park Slope. "All of us out here know what Miranda and her Manhattan-centric friends don't know: People in Brooklyn have a life!"

Oh please. Those of us in Jersey, yes, Jersey, not Joisey, have endured this kind of "abuse" for years. It was bad enough before when everyone thought we all tawked like we's was from north joisey and the south didn't even exist. The Sopranos managed to bring all those stereo types to the forefront again. As much as I love Jersey, it ain't the city. The city is the city and the show is "Sex and the City", not Sex in Brooklyn, aka the 'burbs. I'm sure the people in Brooklyn have a life, so why not get on with it and stop worrying about a fictional character on a TV that only has a few episodes left to air.

It's Not Keen Eddie...but

HARRY GREEN AND EUGENE (A.K.A. JOE GREEN AND EUGENE) (ABC) - The Alphabet's dramedy from the team behind FOX's short-lived "Keen Eddie" - actor Mark Valley, writer Joel Wyman, director Simon West, executive producer Warren Littlefield and Paramount Network Television - has been given the go ahead to produce a pilot.

Valley stars in the dramedy as Harry Green, a Los Angeles private investigator whose life is complicated when his inept brother Eugene comes to town.

As previously reported West will direct the pilot from a script by Wyman with the duo executive producing along with Warren Littlefield and Jib Polhemus. The Littlefield Co. and Frequency Films are also behind the Paramount-produced project.

Denis Leary

dl.jpg

FX has ordered up 13 eps of a drama series starring Denis Leary titled Rescue Me about NY Firefighters. The show focuses on Leary's character, Tommy Gavin, who has become fearful in his job since 9/11. Production begins in April.

Leary is my favorite comedian, I hope this show fares better than "The Job", which didn't get a fair shot at finding an audience.

Sebastian

Sebastian passed away yesterday morning around 2AM. Thankfully, he didn't suffer too much. And he saved me the awful decision of having to take him to have him put to sleep. I'd just gotten off the phone with the vet, we'd felt it was time, we didn't ant him to suffer. I got off the phone and he passed away within minutes. He was a real fighter, a real cutie and I miss him very, very much.

I wanted a black and white kitty and when we were finally able to buy a house, we looked in the paper for a local rescue that had black and white kitties and we found some out on a farm in Jackson. He was so cute and so lively, I fell in love with him at first sight. I raved about him so much that a coworker went and adopted his sister.

Spike, our yellow Lab that passed away 4 years ago, loved Entenmanns. I used to hide it on top of the refrigerator. Spike loved cat food too and the cats hated when he'd gobble up all their food. Suddenly, we'd come home and find any Entenmanns that I had down on the kitchen or living room floor. Actually, I'd find an empty box. We couldn't figure out how he'd gotten it off the refrigerator until one day we caught him and Sebastian at work. 'Bass would jump from the counter across the room to the top of the fridge and Spike would wait under the fridge as Sebastian nudged the box over the side into Spike's waiting mouth! I hope they're having lots of fun together.

"Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in..."

I fought it, I really, really did, both times now. It's possible that I fancy myself a purist, who knows. But, now I must admit that as the title of this post reads, they pulled me back in! Damn you Wolf! Suckering me into yet another Law and Order. It took me over year to even watch SVU, after all, there was no Jack McCoy, no Mike Logan, but finally, I gave in and fell prey to your machinations yet again. And now, it's true, as much as I fought it, I have become a fan of CI. Damn you!

I'm beginning to sound like Stewie on the Family Guy

Sunday Sermon?

There's an article in this week's Island Ad-Vantages about the bank manager who is retiring. The article talks about his life, where he went to school, how he'd come to this little island in Maine and found his true love and married her, staying on, taking various jobs and becoming the bank's top man. A delightful human interest story, but with a twist, the man was a priest and the woman, one of his parishioners. He doesn't like people to say "was", because he says, ?Ordination is for life. Please don't refer to me as a former priest. I will always be a priest.? I suppose it could be argued that we can't pick and choose which part of vows we plan to adhere to and which we don't. How convenient if an errant spouse declared that they were all for marriage, just not for the monogamous part. This man is all for the priesthood, just not the "no marriage" part of the package. If that were to be an argument, I could sympathize, except for the fact that I think the celibacy and no marriage part of the package is ludicrous. It amazes me sometimes how we can shake our heads in disbelief at the women in burkas, yet thriving within American culture is an a vast organization where men are not permitted to have sex and women are treated as second class citizens and *not* in the image and likeness of God. If they were treated as equals, then they would be able to change the host. To make it even more ludicrous, nuns, the closest you can come in the Catholic Church to the female version of a priest, "marry" Christ. How then can we argue against polygamy when the Catholic Church seems more than willing to promote it? They give their life to Christ and "marry" him. I don't know if it's still done today, but "in the old days" there was an actual wedding ceremony as portrayed in the Donna Reed classic, "Green Dolphin Street" (1947). Are they truly marrying Christ? No, it's the same symbolism that applies to the changing of the bread and wine, however, it's very strong symbolism and certainly implies a life of servitude in the old fashioned sense, as opposed to the life of a priest. but, I digress, that's a whole 'nother topic.

Well, that's my sermon for Sunday morning. Sermons are supposed to leave you questioning, anyone got any answers?

Rain

It's raining. After all that frigid weather, what do we get when the moisture comes along? Rain. Icky and washing the pretty snow away making it translucent and slushy. It looks like Ellsworth, Maine got a dusting over night.

AHA! See Ithy, there's more of us out there!! *G*

"Clearly, a growing number of cell phone users are charmed by the spontaneity of snapping a picture whenever and wherever the urge hits them, then immediately zipping it off to friends or family.

And precisely because such shots aren't destined for a photo album or frame, there's less need to fret over getting a picture just right, making the process a more casual affair like e-mail rather than taking a photo."

Why? Well, not only is Ith a bright young woman who has a nice way with a post, but she's a good friend, so yes, I am prejudiced.

Why else? Because she is very, very close to 50,000 hits and I'd like to help her get there, because she's responsible for me having this blog and again, she's a good friend *G*

Sebastian

Thanks Ith and Susan for the good wishes for the Bass man :) He had to go back to the hospital last night and this was after he'd had a sub Q treatment earlier in the day. Our vet is a saint, having gone in on Sunday to give him one. On Monday, he was doing good, went Tuesday morning for a treatment and the Doc was a little concerned about his high sugar count, thought we might have to up the insulin later in the weekl Well, came a bit sooner! *G* 'Bass is doing good, I talked to the nurse a few hours ago and visiting hours are from 5-7. The hard part is, our vet isn't 24 hrs, so he had to go up to another facilty about a half hour away. We didn't take him back to the same emergency place, we decided to try this one after the vet at the other place blew me off last night by telling me that maybe it was his time. Fuck you. He'd never seen the cat, what a complete idiot who didn't even bother to have an ounce of compassion. I was going to just blow it off, but I've changed my mind. zwhst did he bother to become a vet for? The money? Would it have been easier to become a lawyer?! (John will not like that, I'm kidding) I have physical therapy and we're hoping the weather holds out. We *may* be able to bring him home tonight before the weather turns. Garrett is certainly getting a lot of driving under his belt the last few days, which isn't a bad thing.

Thanks *very* much :)

Firefly the movie

http://www.fireflymovie.com/intro.html

From the site:
"FireflyMovie.com is a fan run site dedicated to assuring that Joss Whedon?s television masterpiece Firefly will someday grace the silver screen, and perhaps eventually make it's way back to the small screen either via the airwaves or DVD."

AND

FIREFLY FOR THE TROOPS

The Firefly community is gathering donations so that we can donate copies of Firefly to the U.S. troops in Iraq. From the Official firefly forum:

This effort accomplishes many goals that we can all agree are worthwhile:

1. It will provide entertainment for our soldiers.
2. It will increase sales of the Firefly DVD's.
3. It will increase the fan base, once the recipients see said DVD's!
4. It will give us an opportunity to generate more press for Firefly.

The initial campaign goal is to raise enough funds to purchase 120 copies of the DVD's for dispersal to all USO centers worldwide. Once enough money is raised to accomplish this we can focus on other groups, such as Army personnel stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, aboard Navy ships, etc.

Donations can be made in two ways, through PayPal or by mail to Kristen [of the Firefly: Immediate Assistance campaign.]

To make your donation using PayPal, you can do one of two things:

Go to Paypal and do the contribution manually by hitting "Send Money" and then typing in:

firefly@sgcwebdesign.com.

Or, even easier, you can click on this:

donate

[Paypal does charge a transaction fee. It is 2.9%+ $0.30 USD for US Dollars, 3.4%+ $0.55 CAD for Canadian Dollars, 3.4%+ ¬0.35 EUR for Euros and 3.4%+ £0.20 GBP for British Pounds Sterling.]

To make a donation the old fashioned way, you can mail your check or money order directly to:

Kristen Reidel
SGC Web Design
6101 W. Centinela Avenue, Suite 375
Culver City, CA 90230

Checks should be made payable to Kristen Reidel. Please note that if you are sending money from outside the US, you will need to purchase a money order in US DOLLARS or we will be unable to use your contribution due the high fees associated with cashing checks or money orders issued in foreign currency.

This donation drive will be open until Friday, January 30th, 2004. This gives you plenty of time to find a few extra dollars to help Serenity & her crew.

Let the giving begin!

Whining

A whine post -

Last night at 11PM, the phone rings, it's work - "Where am I?" I call them back, I couldn't get to the phone fast enough tthe first time - I'm here, at home, I called out sick, due to my neck, *days* ago. Poor kid was going to be forced. I felt bad, but I couldn't go to work, I can't sit for that long, nor can I type for that long and since they've gone and put cameras in the room now,
~~ YES! CAMERAS! ~~
I doubt they'd want me sitting there with my feet up and all, which is the only way I'm even slightly comfortable. To say nothing of the fact that they'd probably frown on the vicodin consumption while working. My co-worker had booked too, so now two of them were being forced. I felt bad for them, I really did, just plain sucks.

4AM - my son wakes me - the cat is throwing up weird stuff and falling down.
He's dehydrated. I'd hoped he'd make it to 8AM, to go to the regular vet, he won't. Off to the emergency vet. The emergency vet, a nice young woman who looks like she's 15, is very concerned. So are we, but, we've seen this before and I think she mistook our (seemingly) non-chalant attitude for not caring. No, we care, we just know that we caught it before it was way serious. We have to leave him, which sucks. He's doing well and the female vet today had a chat with our vet and she seemed to understand the situation a lot better. We're going to visit him tonight and he can come home in the morning and then go straight to Dr Hudson.

Nothing back on the MRI, everyone seems to have closed up shop early today.

I wish the vicodin ES, worked better. But, at least I'm getting some sleep now. I can't wait to be able to go to physical therapy.
