Love Actually

I finally saw Love Actually last night. I'd wanted to see it when it came out, but never got around to it. What a treat! And a good laugh that I needed. There's something about Hugh Grant that just endears me to him, I think he's hysterical. And the movie is just chock full of British eye candy for women my age mostly. Which brings me to the only real drawback of the movie, now true, I'm going to go with the actor's real ages, but I didn't get the impression that they were supposed to be playing much out of their own age range - That said, the fact that Colin Firth's, age 44 character was initially involved with a character played by Sienna Guillory, who is 29. And later proposes to a younger woman, played by Lucia Monez, who is 29.

Emma Thompson, who's 45 was married to Alan Rickman, who's 58 and Hugh Grant, who's 44, was playing Emma's *older* brother. Plausible. But, yet again, older man, younger woman. And Grant's character couples with Martine McCutcheon, 28. Oddly, Thomson's character ponts out how Martine's character, Natalie, would have been Grant's character's type, 20 years ago and then there's Liam Neeson 52, whose character hooks up with Claudia Schiffer's (34) character.

There was one reverse, Laura Linney (40), her character with Rodrigo Santoro's (29).

Still, I laughed, it was a witty, well acted comedy with a handsome cast.

Memorable lines:

Billy Mack: Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don't buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free.
Karen: There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?
Daisy: Duh.

Disaster Relief Dogs

A relief worker at Pier 94 wrote the following poem.

"Dedicated to the therapy dogs at Pier 94 in NYC who work so hard responding to the human mess of 9/11, particularly to my special friend, Wusel*. Thank you, dogs and humans for your undying love."

"Paws amidst Pain" by Sarah Sypniewski

The hours upon hours you pad through these paths of pain,
are the hours you help us see the light through the pouring rain.
You never falter, never fail, and always call to mind,
the joy and inspiration that’s sometimes hard to find.
As we muddle through the wreckage that’s half hope and half despair,
You stand by like an anchor, tail wagging in the air.

With every touch you heal us, from fur to human heart,
solace in each stroke, you prevent our falling apart.
You never complain and though you cry, you do not show your tears,
you swallow them back, hold your post and calm so many fears.
Your spirit penetrates our beings right into our souls,
You let us touch and talk to you as we try to fill the holes.

There are times we want to just give up and head back to our homes,
and there you are with pricked up ears and then we’re not alone.
You sign, surrender, knowingly roll onto your back,
"Here’s my tummy - you can have it…just give me a snack.

You do so much for us we just can’t do ourselves,
you specialize in soulspeak that never ceases to delve.
Straight into the place we do not talk about,
You let us cry and let us laugh and get all of it out.

So before I go, I want to say I hope you know the truth,
you saved me every single day, I survived because of you.

Musings

"They" say that as you get older, you have a better sense of who you are, you're more comfortable in your skin etc etc. I didn't really buy that, I'm still not sure that I do, but I do know that lately, I'm less tolerate of the little bs things. I cut bait faster. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, but right now, I like the fact that I'm not allowing myself to be weighed down with the emotional baggage that often accompanies prolonged decisions. I don't sweat it out as much, I just do it.

Enough!

I've had with bloggers constantly asking for money. It's pathetic. How can people carry on about how they're doing this or that and then ask you for a frellin' handout just because they want something or somehow feel that you should be paying to read their witicisms. News flash people - there are plenty of other blogs to read that don't constantly have their hands out.

Thanksgiving

The sky alternated between overcast and sunny today. It began as one of those cloudy, dangerous looking days with the wind occasionally whipping up and pushin gthe clouds away. The sun would burst through and it was incredibly bright and clean looking. I know, that doesn't exactly make sense, but it was. As if the earth were a fresh sheet hung out to dry on the line in the yard.

We had a fresh turkey today, it was very good and so easy. no thawing, no worrying about the thawing.....get the feeling I leave these things to the last minute?

I'm still in my Beans (pajamas) and relaxing.

Happy Thanksgiving

Random Thoughts

I wanted to buy The Da Vinci Code today, but it hasn't come out in paperback yet and I didn't feel like spending the extra money for the hardcover. I know, I know, it's only a few more dollars, but those few dollars can add up.

I love the HDTV - thank you Garrett!!

Amazing

There are days when my horoscope amazes me -

You could be in for quite a shock at some point. People will surprise you no matter how well you think you know them. If you can't learn to live with it, try to figure out a way to proceed without them. Keep in mind that if something isn't set in stone, it's most likely subject to change -- and even being set in stone is no guarantee. It's best just to cut your losses and move on. Don't waste too much time planning a strategy for resisting the unknown. It isn't worth the fight.

Carnival of the Dogs

Why wasn't there are Carnival this past Sunday? For one reason, no entries. No surprise there, I hardly ever get any, I search for entries myself. But, this Sunday we were busy. One of our fosters, Trouble, went to her new home and she has a wonderful new home with friends of ours! And Skye went to meet some nice people and a four legged family member, who it turns out will be his new family! Of course, this both overjoys me and breaks my heart. But, that's the nature of fostering.

I almost lost my temper tonight when someone said to me that they couldn't do it because they wouldn't gve the dogs up. What does that make me? Less caring? No, in my opinion, it makes them selfish. Skye's new family has already told me that they'll be putting him on their pet insurance, they have a beautiful home, a great piece of property and they are very nice people. His new brother is sweet and they played great together.

Trouble was much easier to part with, she'll be living almost around the block with a friend and she'll be very loved and well cared for.

And an update on Paris, I spoke to her Mom right before we went to California and she's doing wonderful!

I tear up every time I look at Skye now, but I know it's for the best. So, if you can take your heart breaking once in a awhile, but feel it mend as you rejoice in the good that you've done, then please, become a foster family and give a dog or cat a chance at a new life.

Foster Poem

by Barb Lieberman

There I sat, alone and afraid,

You got a call and came right to my aid.

You bundled me up with blankets and love.

And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.

I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.

That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.

You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.

You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.

And just when I thought you'd done all you do

There came along not one new lesson but two.

First you said, Sweetheart, you’re ready to go.

I’ve done all I can and you’ve learned all I know.

Then, you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.

Along came a new family, they even have "kids"!

They took me to their home, forever to stay.

At first I thought you sent me away.

Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.

No matter how far, you will always be near.

And so, Foster Mom, you know I’ve moved on.

I have a new home with toys and a lawn.

But I’ll never forget what I learned that first day.

You never really give your fosters away.

So you gave me these thoughts to remember you by.

We may never meet again and now I know why.

You’ll remember I lived with you, for a short time.

I may not be yours but you’ll always be mine.

Poem courtesy of Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California, which is so fitting, since Skye's new brother is a rescued Bassett Hound!

I voted

I voted today, I hope you all did.

For the first time in my life, I voted Democratic. I'm not happy with either candidate. I have friends who are staunch supporters of their candidate, I envy that. I have had that in the past, but not this time.

This morning at work, someone said that they didn't like either candidate either, basically, they felt that both candidates were idiots and they were inclined to vote for the "The idiot that they knew". I'd heard this sentiment before and I hope this hasn't been a widespread sentiment.

Despite what another blogger, whom I respect has stated, that "Jersey is Bush country", no, it's not. NJ is traditionally a Democratic state and they have apparently remained so.

Four years ago I remember the dread that I felt as Bush won the election, it was a raw, unnerving feeling. For me, the ship was not just unmanned, it was being steered towards disaster. I don't blame President Bush for 9/11, but I do feel he could have handled things much differently, both before and after. I've heard all the talk about how security has been tightened etc etc, yet, I've seen different. I used to know someone who is paralyzed, they deserve a better chance. I could go on with my reasons why I choose John Kerry today, but I won't. I don't usually speak about politics here and who I voted for isn't really the point of this post.

Do I hope that John Kerry will win? Yes. Am I glad to see that the early projections are that NJ will support John Kerry? Yes. And if John Kerry doesn't win, I can only hope and pray that President Bush will listen and take into account that a great many people are questioning how he's been handling things. I don't expect miracles, but I hope and pray that whatever the outcome that the President takes into account how many people came out today to let their voice be heard, that we are, as Americans strong and not apathetic as so many others would portray us and although my vote was probably cancelled out by the person sitting next to me at work this morning, that wasn't the point, I wanted my voice to be heard, hopefully it will be.
